Many with advanced degrees are struggling to find employment in many countries across the world. Universities are to blame for this and they have to reform their approach and courses.

Many graduates claim that there are no permanent jobs available for them. In today’s world, because of the changing economy and the intense competition, employers are looking for more skillful staff who can fulfill a task rather than those who have many certificates with no practical knowledge. This means that entrepreneurs do not tend to have long-term contracts with their employees to put the pressure on them to keep themselves up to date.  

This problem stems from the education system and courses at universities. Many courses are long and boring and even the way they are presented to the students is theory-based. No critical thinking, team work and project-based tasks are involved so that students can become down-to-earth and ready for working environments.

The solution involves university education to be more practical. Designing short-term courses targeting part-time and evening jobs so that students can start work while they are studying will be beneficial especially because they acquire different useful skills. Another more long-term measure to take is to change all the academics’ mindset about the way courses are held and how they should form their students’ attitude to have the right expectation from what they are doing at university. Long gone are the days that students expected to have a permanent job after graduation.

In conclusion, in my opinion, job security is an obsolete idea and universities should prepare their students to be adaptive and teach them skills that are expected to be implemented at new working environments.
